Barbary Coast Trail Walking Tour - Part 2

Gold Rushers, Shanghaiers, and Jazz DancersMeet tour guide Jeanne Beaudet in Portsmouth Square on the upper level by the flagpole (Kearny and Clay streets).From the birthplace of the Gold Rush and the village of Yerba Buena, the tour heads down Commercial Street to the original shoreline. We'll walk along the old shoreline to the Pony Express headquarters site and to the grave of a Gold Rush ship. From there we enter the Jackson Square Historic District to see the city's last Gold Rush and Barbary Coast-era buildings, including a 19th century shanghaiing den. Finally, the tour explores Terrific Street, where Jelly Roll Morton performed and early jazz dancers invented steps like the turkey trot and the prancing pony.
