The Marston House presents Stickley & Friends in collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) exhibition Gustav Stickley and the American Arts and Crafts Movement, June 18-September 11, 2011.
Included in the temporary exhibit are works both rare and everyday by Gustav Stickley, Stickley Brothers, and L & J Stickley, along with works of art by Stickley contemporaries. These pieces are on loan by friends and members of SOHO, hence Stickley and Friends is the sentiment expressed in both the current and in the historic sense.
Among the special items is an extensive collection of the candlesticks of Robert Jarvie of Chicago, c. 1901-1912. Gustav Stickley used Jarvie candlesticks to grace his furniture in catalogue illustrations, and in his Craftsman Homes publications and in the work of several prairie school architects.
Works by San Diego artists will also be on display, Anna Valentien's famous watercolors of San Diego wildflowers, oils by Charles Fries, Maurice Braun, and Alfred Mitchell, all which serve to illustrate how San Diego's landscape couldn't help but compel artists to embrace the plein air or Impressionist style of painting so connected in people's minds with the Arts & Crafts movement.

• Currently on exhibit at the Marston House is a rare gathering of Arts & Crafts furniture built or designed by San Diego architects of the Arts & Crafts era: Irving Gill, Richard Requa and Frank Mead, on display in the only time these pieces have all been seen together in one place.
The SDMA exhibition, which is organized by the Dallas Museum of Art, is the first nationally touring exhibition to focus on the career of Stickley (1858-1942), one of the leading figures of the American Arts & Crafts movement.
