Hard Hat Tour - Portland’s Oldest Building: Hallock McMillan Building Tour 2011
July 14, 2011 |
In 1857, a new brick building arose on the corner of Front Street at Oak, designed by Absalom Hallock. Hallock’s career as Portland’s first architect began in 1851, and he was also the Portland “rep” for San Francisco’s Phoenix Iron Works. He used cast-iron to front his Hallock & McMillan building, adding to Portland’s transformation from a “stump town” into a modern hub of commerce and development. His contractor, William McMillan, not only built the new structure, but also joined Hallock in tenancy there – perhaps as Portland’s first “design-build” business entity. Despite its unfortunate modernizing in the 1940s, the Hallock & McMillan building survived the cast-iron demolition waves of the 20th Century, and today it stands as Portland’s oldest building. Soon its exterior will be restored by proud new owner, John Russell, whose track record of remarkable restorations is evident on both sides of his new project.
We’re pleased to present this special opportunity for a “hard hat tour” of this transformation-in-progress, going back in time more than 150 years! Attendees will tour the inside of this very historic building and learn about the building’s initial construction, its changes over time, and the vision for its future. This special evening will include refreshments, door prizes, an inside look into the adjacent Dielschneider Building (another of Russell’s masterpiece projects), and a guided walking tour of the surrounding cast-iron and other historic buildings. Be a part of “history in the making” and sign up now to join us on July 14th.
