June 23, 2007 |
Saturday, June 23, 2007 10 a.m. to noon
Tour begins in front of the Vesuvio Café and City Lights Bookstore on Columbus Avenue near Broadway.
Hipsters, Pisanos, and Semaphore Hill Meet tour guide Jeanne Beaudet on Columbus Avenue between Vesuvio Café and City Lights Bookstore.
Explore the vibrant artistic and cultural traditions of North Beach – from the Italian immigrants to the free-spirited Beats, all of whom left their imprint on this area. We begin between two of San Francisco's beat-era icons. From there we explore Little Italy, where we visit an Italian bakery that still makes bread by hand. A walk up Telegraph Hill brings us to Coit Tower and its priceless Depression-era murals. We also imagine looking out for arriving vessels in San Francisco Bay as Gold Rushers did 150 years ago. |
