Cast-Iron Portland: Skidmore-Old Town Walking Tour
August 4, 2011 |
There may be no better way to see the oldest part of downtown than by attending this always popular summer evening walking tour. Come learn the history of the area in which Portland began. Get an up-close understanding of how architectural cast-iron was used throughout most of the last half of the 19th century. You’ll also gain insight into this historically important district as your tour guide describes the sense of architectural unity that once defined the area as well as the unfortunate loss of buildings that have been demolished. We think you’ll find a new appreciation of cast iron and gain a better understanding of Portland’s architectural heritage.
Skidmore-Old Town includes some of the city’s oldest standing buildings including the Dielschneider Building (1859), the New Market Theater (1872), and the Glisan Building (1889), one of the last cast-iron buildings constructed in Portland.
Meet your tour guide at Skidmore Fountain: SW 1st and Ankeny.
