2011 Kentucky Historic Preservation Legislative Summit

August 18, 2011

Preservation Kentucky in Conjunction with the Kentucky Heritage Council are proud to present,

The 2011 Historic Preservation Legislative Summit

On August 18-19, 2011, historic preservationists and archaeologists from across the Commonwealth will convene to discuss the future of state and national historic preservation legislation. The one-and-a-half day summit will focus on how best to deliver the preservation message to our state and federal lawmakers and what that message will be.

Sessions will include:

*Case studies in successful lobbying from nonprofit organizations across Kentucky, which will include wisdom from the Kentucky Travel Industry Association and the Nature Conservancy of Kentucky

*Lobbying 101: How to get your message heard in the State Legislature

*A guide to the Kentucky Legislature, i.e. how do bills get passed, what does it mean when a bill passes through a committee, etc.

*A lunch-time conversation with state legislators, featuring Rep Tanya Pullin and Rep Arnold Simpson

*Renee Kuhlman of the National Trust for Historic Preservation will highlight successful case studies in historic preservation legislation from across the nation

*A Friday morning breakfast session with Erik Hein of Preservation Action in Washington, D.C. Hein will discuss legislation and funding as it relates to the federal preservation movement.

Breakout sessions on Thursday afternoon will focus on the state and federal tax credits, archaeology, Main Street, and others selected by participants. At the end of the summit, participants will have prioritized list for the next state legislative session and an outline for a legislative action plan. Additionally, the group will chose a week in February to designate Historic Preservation Week in the Kentucky Legislature and activities that highlight the importance of preservation to the Commonwealth.
