Open House & Guided Tour of the Historic Cemetery

August 28, 2011

The tour will start at 3 p.m. and will be guided by Bill Jayne, Chris Fonvielle and Fred Johnson. Bill is a former staff member with the Department of Veterans Affairs, and was responsible for planning cemetery site expansion and acquisition. Chris is an Associate Professor of History at UNCW and a great authority of the Civil War, especially in Wilmington and eastern NC. He is the author of several books on the the subject. Fred is a local Civil War reenactor with Battery B, 2nd Regiment US Colored Light Artillery. Well versed on the activities and history of United States Colored Troops (USCT) in the South during the war, Fred’s great grandfather was a member of a USCT unit that served in SC, GA and FL. Fred, together with two other local men led the effort to recognize the service of the USCT troops in the Wilmington campaign of 1865 and the presence of more than 500 men who lost their lives in the struggle and are buried in the Wilmington National Cemetery. Their initiative resulted in the recent placement of a NC State Highway marker adjacent to the cemetery which recognizes the presence of the graves of the USCT men buried here. These three different but complimentary presentations on this site and its history will offer a new perspective on Wilmington’s National Cemetery.
