History Day Open House

August 27, 2011

Tour a piece of Oregon’s outdoor past on Aug. 27 during a “History Day Open House” on the northern shoulders of Mount Hood.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Cloud Cap Inn, Tilly Jane Guard Station and A-Frame and the Oregon Snow Shoe Club Building will be open to visitors.

Those structures are located within the Cloud Cap-Tilly Jane Historic District and are considered the oldest structures on the mountain, some dating to 1889.

You can take a tour through the buildings, learn their history, and meet with people representing the organizations that maintain them from the Crag Rats Search and Rescue Organization, the Oregon Nordic Club and the Oregon Snow Shoe Club.

In keeping with the historic theme, old-time musical entertainment will be provided at the historic American Legion Amphitheater and Cloud Cap Inn.

Pack a picnic lunch and plenty of drinking water.

Dogs are prohibited in the buildings and must be on a leash when walking through the area.

The Cloud Cap Road has many water bars, small raised berms, crossing the road to prevent soil erosion. The water bars also act as speed bumps causing travel up the road to be slow, especially for passenger cars.

Because of the limited amount of parking space, carpooling is encouraged.

Or you can go old school and hike to the Historic District via the Tilly Jane Trail No. 643, which is rated extremely strenuous.

The recreation pass requirement at the Cloud Cap and Tilly Jane trailheads will be waived for the event.

To get to the site, take Highway 35 south of Hood River to signs pointing to the Cooper Spur Ski Resort. It’s a nine-mile, relatively bumpy ride on Cloud Cap Road from Cooper Spur.

Contact: The Hood River Ranger District at (541) 352-6002.
