Make No Little Plans: A Symposium on Visions for Providence

September 15-17, 2011
Make No Little Plans: A Symposium on Visions for Providence
On September 15, 16, and 17, the Providence Preservation Society (PPS), in collaboration with the American Institute of Architects RI chapter (AIAri), explores the making of a great city through these dramatic large-scale urban planning opportunities. Make No Little Plans: A Symposium on Visions for the City of Providence will look at the legacy of the past and apply lessons learned to this transformative moment for Providence’s future.

Keynote speakers include Kathryn Madden, Principle of Madden Planning Group and critic at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and Francis Leazes Jr., Author of Providence: The Renaissance City, professor of Political Science, Rhode Island College.

The Symposium will begin on Thursday, September 15, with a free 6:00 pm film screening at the RISD Museum (20 North Main St) of “Make No Little Plans: Daniel Burnham and the American City”; and also that evening from 5:00 -8:00 pm at 158 Washington Street, AIAri will host a Gallery Night reception for the
Symposium Exhibit of drawings and models of built and un-built proposals for
Providence from the past 30 years.

The Symposium program will continue on Friday, September 16 and Saturday, September 17 with a look back at Capital Center, and forward to the Jewelry
District / I-195 redevelopment. To enrich the conversation, major players in
the development of Capital Center and the Jewelry District, as well as noted local historians and urbanists, have been enlisted to conduct tours of significant relevant projects. The Exhibit will also be open 2:00 - 5:00pm on September 16
and 17.  The Symposium will culminate with a Gala on Saturday evening, September 17, to be held on the dramatic rooftop terrace of the GTECH building.
