Join the Conversación about Latino Heritage
October 1, 2011 |
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is committed to engaging America's diverse communities in preserving and sharing the stories and places that matter to them. As part of this mission, we launched the Latino Heritage Initiative in 2010. Since that time, the National Trust has convened a series of regional meetings, or “Conversaciones,” to provide us with best practices and recommendations that support Latinos nationwide in saving the places and neighborhoods that matter to them, and to ensure that the National Trust’s work embraces the full range of our country’s cultural experiences. This year, the Midwest Office has sponsored Conversaciones in Kansas City, Chicago, and Des Moines.
Our Chicago Conversación will be held on October 1st, during Hispanic Heritage Month, in conjunction with other major cultural events. This will provide opportunities for the participants to socialize and network both before and after the Conversación, while also enjoying some of Chicago’s most exciting cultural offerings. Through these gatherings, we will initiate a dialogue that we hope will result in expanded local efforts to identify, protect, and celebrate Hispanic cultural heritage.
The Des Moines Conversación was held in conjunction with the National Main Streets Conference on Tuesday, May 24th. We discussed how to engage Hispanics and Latinos in historic preservation on Main Streets and strategies for engaging Latino and Hispanic business owners in downtown revitalization.
As part of the Cambio de Colores (Change of Colors) conference, the Kansas CityConversación took place on June 10th. The Cambio de Colores conference brings together researchers, practitioners, decision-makers, and community members to discuss the issues that Missouri and other Midwest states face as a result of demographic changes, with a focus on Latino and Hispanic communities. By holding the Conversación in conjunction with the Cambio de Colores conference, we were able to engage Latino leaders and stakeholders from the Kansas City metropolitan area in addition to participants at the conference. Nearly 40 participants at the Kansas City Conversación spent the afternoon talking about issues of Hispanic heritage preservation, generating many good ideas for further collaboration to identify, document, and protect this important facet of the American experience.
