Free Historic Properties Workshop: Maintaining Historic Properties
November 10, 2011 |
The Preservation Foundation will be presenting this year’s Historic Properties Workshop on Thursday, November 10th. It is the sixth historic properties workshop in as many years. Subtitled Maintaining Historic Properties, this year the focus is on the upkeep of historic materials and the refurbishing, replacing, renovating and restoring of materials that goes along with that. It is open to the public and free to all.
The workshop is designed to create an awareness within the community about the treatment and maintenance of historic properties. Property owners, real estate brokers, architects, builders, city planners, Town serving members of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, ARCOM and Town Council are among the target audience.
It is being sponsored by Hedrick Brothers Construction and offers AIA accreditation with AICP accreditation pending.
The lectures and discussion will be held at the Foundation’s offices in the Rosenthal Lecture Room from 9am to 12:30pm. The offices are located at 311 Peruvian Avenue.
There is no fee to attend, but seating is limited. To make reservations, or for more information, please contact Janice Owens, Associate Director at janiceowens@palmbeachpreservation.org or 561.832.0731, ext. 107.
Local experts will share vital information on what works best in their field and its relevance in the preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction of historic properties. The topics of discussion include: lead paint, water intrusion, tile-marble-cast stone & floors, wrought iron, impact windows, roofing, wood, materials, and siding (see attached agenda). Among those speaking will be President of Research Atlantica and Preservation Consultant for the Town of Palm Beach Jane S. Day, Architect Gene Pandula of The Pandula Architects Inc., Chris Mattingly and Robin Lunsford of Hedrick Borthers, Rick Herpel of Herpel Inc., Jim Bailey of Reich Metals, Jim Sztuk of Zeluk Custom Wood Windows & Doors, bespoke carpenters Joe Hart and Jason Lovelady, and John Maffett from Coastal Millworks.
In particular, what is acceptable and not acceptable for the preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction of historic properties will be discussed. As well, sustainable strategies and technologies that may be associated with new construction will be presented, as well as ways to incorporate them with the old.
A question and answer panel session for specific concerns to be addressed with all speakers will conclude the workshop.
The first historic properties workshop was held in 1997. In 2006, the workshop was revived and the series looks to build on the overwhelming success of the past few years. The program’s goal is to provide the public with practical information about the various facets of historic properties in Palm Beach and the town as a whole. Participants will develop a better understanding of historic properties.
