Historic Preservation Seminar: Retooling the Motor City at the Society of Architectural Historians 65th Annual Conference in Detroit, MI
Wednesday, April 18, 2012
8:00am-5:00pm
Facilitated by: Brian D. Conway Brian D. Conway, State
Historic Preservation Officer, Michigan State Housing Development Authority
(SHPO/MSHDA)
Historic areas of Detroit are experiencing a rebirth as the city retools itself in the twenty-first century. Urban entrepreneurs are drawn to the outstanding early-twentieth century architecture for new business locations and living; corporations are investing in skyscrapers and moving headquarters downtown; and city, state, and federal agencies are rebuilding infrastructure and offering programs to assist in this revitalization. This seminar will bring together administrators, practitioners, and entrepreneurs to discuss this positive change and the critical role that historic preservation plays.
Program includes discussions on Midtown Live by Susan T. Mosey and Scott Lowell, Entrepreneurs and Business Attraction by Mark Denson and Randall Fogelman, Southwest Detroit-Immigrant Influence by Kathleen Wendler and Omar Hernandez, Detroit Works-Rightsizing the Big D by Robert Anderson and Burney Johnson, The new Model: Detroit's Future by Laura Trudeau and Brian D. Conway, State Historic Preservation Officer, Michigan State Housing Development Authority (SHPO/MSHDA).
Following the talks, the program includes a bus tour to visit areas discussed in the morning session, with stops to look at projects in the following neighborhoods: Midtown, Southwest Detroit, and Eastern Market.
Pre-registration is required. This program is open to the public; Annual Conference registration is not required. Seating is limited. Click
