Preservation of Steel Windows - Hands On Workshop
June 10-15, 2012 |
2012 Preservation Workshops - Pine Mountain Settlement School
Since 2002, Pine Mountain Settlement School has offered hands-on field schools that emphasize practical preservation techniques that anyone should be able to master. The Pine Mountain School for Practical Historic Preservation has brought some of the country’s most skilled traditional building instructors to southeast Kentucky.
From these workshops, participants have gone on to conduct repairs on their homes, to work on important civic structures, and to help promote the idea that in most cases, repair rather than replacement is often the most desirable and cost-effective way to address common maintenance issues.
All workshops are geared toward people of all skills levels and would be beneficial for homeowners, contractors, and managers of historic properties.
This year’s classes continue that tradition with -
Preservation of Steel Windows: Hands On Workshop
Instructor: Jim Turner / Turner Restoration - Detroit MI
Jim Turner is a Preservation Trades Network, Inc, member and demonstrator and owner of Turner Restoration based in Detroit, Michigan. During this workshop, participants will learn how to remove the steel window units from openings in brick, tile, stone and wood buildings to facilitate restoration of all components. Jim will show how to repair rusted and bent sections of windows; replace missing components, adjust frames, remove and reapply glazing, remove and reapply paint, how to repair window hardware and all other aspects of steel window restoration. Workshop demonstrations include how to build a spray paint booth and how to weld new sections for windows. Included in the workshop will be sessions on work safety practices.
Jim started his restoration business in 2004, not long after he attended two weeklong window repair workshops in 2002 at Pine Mountain. Ten years later, Jim returns
to Pine Mountain Settlement School as one of the leading tradesmen in the
country in steel window restoration. “I cannot express the impact those weeks have made on my work in preservation and the practical application of traditional trade methods,” he says. Jim had been working to support historic preservation in Detroit, where he lived, for several years, and in other parts of Michigan. With the hands-on training he received at Pine Mountain, he was able to teach others in his neighborhood
some basic skills. He has helped to develop a High School Preservation Overlay Program for vocational students. He has also conducted several window repair workshops throughout the United States.
Cost for the workshop is only $950, which includes tuition, meals, lodging, student
materials, and safety glasses.
