Preservation of Wood Windows: Hands On Workshop

July 15-20, 2012
Preservation of Wood Windows: Hands On Workshop
Since 2002, Pine Mountain Settlement School has offered hands-on field schools that emphasize practical preservation techniques that anyone should be able to master.

The Pine Mountain School for Practical Historic Preservation has brought some of the country’s most skilled traditional building instructors to southeast Kentucky. From these workshops, participants have gone on to conduct repairs on their homes, to work on important civic structures, and to help promote the idea that in most cases, repair rather than replacement is often the most desirable and cost-effective way to address common maintenance issues.   All workshops are geared toward people of all skills levels and would be beneficial for homeowners, contractors, and managers of historic properties.

Preservation of Wood Windows: Hands On Workshop
Instructor: Duffy Hoffman - Hoffman Preservation and Restoration Elkins WV

Duffy Hoffman, Preservation Trades Network, Inc., member and demonstrator, and owner of P and R Inc.  Participants will learn all aspects about restoration of wood windows. Participants will follow the sash restoration process from removal of the window, paint removal, repair, use of epoxies, dutchman repair, glazing and reinstallation. Duffy will talk about the pros and cons of window weatherization, including the energy savings of storm windows.  You will learn how to make your windows snug and sound.

Duffy Hoffman, a third-generation craftsman, has done window restoration for more than 25 years. He combines traditional craftsman techniques with new technologies. He has completed several projects on historic landmarks, including The Highlands, in Fort Washington, PA; The Sheldon House in Princeton, N.J., home of John Witherspoon, signer of the Declaration of Independence; The Cornwall Iron Furnace in Cornwall, PA; and the Charles Carroll Manor House in Ellicott City, MD, home of another signee of the Declaration of Independence. Duffy is a specialist in painting and lead-safe work practices, and is a Certified Renovator and Certified Dust Sampling
Technician.

Cost of the workshop is only $650, which includes tuition, meals, lodging, student materials and safety glasses.  To register or for more information call 606 -558-3571 or go to http://www.pinemountainsettlementschool.com.
