February 2, 2012 |
The Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach will hold its annual walking tour on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 2pm.
The fee to attend the tour is $50 per person. One must be a MEMBER of the Preservation Foundation to attend.
Space is limited, so please call the Preservation Foundation to reserve at 561.832.0731.
This year’s area of focus will be Dunbar Road area in the estate section of Palm Beach. Dunbar Road is an eclectic mix of significant architectural styles that make the street unique. Mediterranean Revival, Colonial Revival, Regency, Monterey, Bermuda, Ranch, Modern and Late Twentieth Century styles of architecture complement the design of Dunbar Road. It did not always look this way. On the 1919 Sanborn Insurance Map there is not one footprint of a structure for Dunbar Road. The earliest homes on or near the street were built in 1923 by architects Addison Mizner and Bruce P. Kitchell. Mizner designed Villa Flora, Costa Bella, and Carstairs along North Ocean Boulevard ; Kitchell designed a home in the first block across the street from Mizner’s Casa Del Pastor. Slowly through the thirties and into the fifties, architects Marion Sims Wyeth, John L. Volk, Julius Jacobs and Henry Harding were among those designing houses along Dunbar Road. The old meets the new. Hidden in the midst of the 200 block of Dunbar Road is Buttonwood. Buttonwood was the home of Palm Beach’s first mayor, E. N. “Cap” Dimick. Originally known as Orangerie, it was moved after Dimick’s death to its present location. Here it was named Buttonwood after the buttonwood tree in the front of the property. In 1992 Buttonwood was honored with the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach’s Ballinger Award for excellence in its restoration.
The tour will begin at the offices of the Foundation. There the Foundation’s Associate Director Janice Owens will give a presentation explaining the importance of the area and significant features members will see on the tour. Each member will also be given a tour guide booklet which Owens has put together. From there the tour group will be broken up into groups, each group lead by a member of the Preservation Foundation’s staff. The groups will then head over to Dunbar Road and tour the area individually. The Preservation Foundation wishes to thank in advance David Ober and Sotheby’s for their generosity in sponsoring the 2012 Walking Tour and Jane B. Holzer for hosting the closing tea. A note of appreciation is extended to all those who have graciously agreed to open their properties to the tour. |
