Historic New England presents Preservation Month programs
Historic New England and the Waltham Historical Society celebrate Preservation Month with a series of presentations on Tuesdays, May 8 through May 29 at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, Massachusetts, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
May 8 - Architectural Styles in Waltham’s History: From the Seventeenth Century to the Present
Join Jack Cox, teacher, board member of the Waltham Historical Society, and member of the Waltham Historical Commission and examine the range of architectural styles in Waltham over the past three hundred years. Examine details of homes still in existence and explore some of the transformations made as owners added, renovated, or re-purposed dwellings. Learn where you can see local examples of dentils, entablatures, friezes, and pilasters.
May 15 - Understanding Your Old House
Learn how to piece together the history of your house as Joseph Cornish, senior stewardship manager at Historic New England, shows where to track down records of your home’s history and what your old house says about its past. If you are planning a big project or just modernizing a bathroom, you may not be sure where to start. Sally Zimmerman, manager of historic preservation services at Historic New England, talks about the differences between preservation and rehabilitation and how to plan for making changes to an old house.
May 22 - Painting and Maintaining Your Old House
Whether your house was built in 1760 or 1960, an annual inspection helps prioritize repair and routine maintenance projects to ensure its preservation. Joseph Cornish reveals what to look for and how to address common problems. Sally Zimmerman discusses how to use exterior color to improve curb appeal, what colors work with which architectural styles, and how color can rejuvenate and play up the best features of the house’s design.
May 29 - Weatherizing Your Old House
Simple, cost-effective energy upgrades and traditional repairs can make your old house more comfortable to live in and more efficient to operate. It is possible to make any older home greener and more sustainable. Hear tips based on Historic New England’s work at its historic houses and tour the weatherization upgrades at the Lyman Estate to see how this National Historic Landmark is meeting today’s energy conservation challenges.
The series takes place at Historic New England’s Lyman Estate, 185 Lyman Street, Waltham, Mass. The fee is $30 for the series. Pricing is available for tickets for individual presentations. Please call 617-994-5959 for more information or register online.
