APT Charleston 2012 Conference

September 30 - October 4, 2012

The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) will be hosting its 44th Conference in one of the United States' top preservation-minded cities, Charleston, South Carolina, from September 30-October 4, 2012. Participants can register at www.aptconference.org. Best rates are available prior to August 6.

"APT Charleston 2012 will bring together leading preservationists from around the world for an open dialogue about the importance of teamwork in preservation," said Joan C. Berkowitz, President of APT. "Our focus on collaboration includes all specialties, from architect to craftsperson. We are thrilled to host our Conference in parallel with the International Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW) hosted by the Preservation Trades Network (PTN)."

HISTORIC CHARLESTON

The nation's first historic district was born in Charleston in 1931, predating the federal government's by 30 years. Charleston's impressive list of preservation firsts include using zoning as a preservation tool, publishing an inventory of historic architecture, the Historic Charleston Foundation's use of revolving funds to focus on the rehabilitation of entire neighborhoods, and establishing the first four-year American college devoted to the traditional building trades (the American College of the Building Arts).

With 100 years of experience in developing the tools of practice and civic engagement to sustain urban vitality through preservation, Charleston is a living laboratory and tangible embodiment of the Conference theme, "Cornerstones: Collaborative Approaches to Preservation."

HIGHLIGHTS

Much of the Conference will take place at the meticulously restored Francis Marion Hotel, located in the heart of historic downtown Charleston on legendary King Street across from Marion Square. Participants can choose from nearly 60 sessions covering four Conference tracks and from multiple demonstrations by craftspeople through the IPTW.

Two-day hands-on workshops include the topics of Traditional Masonry Practice, which will be held in Charleston's Old City Jail, home of the American College of the Building Arts; Conservation of Historic Glazing, which will allow participants to travel to Savannah, GA, to learn firsthand about restoring leaded and decorative stained glass from that city's historic churches; and Historic Decorative Finishes, which will be held in the 1800s Charleston home of former South Carolina Governor William Aiken, Jr.

Participants can choose to tour Auldbrass Plantation, the only southern plantation designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, located in historic Beaufort County. Held privately, the house and grounds are rarely open for public view and have been carefully restored.

The Conference Social takes place at The Cistern Yard, the literal and figurative center of the College of Charleston campus, with the keynote address by Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., the namesake of a Leadership in City Design award by the American Architectural Foundation and the U. S. Conference of Mayors.

In-depth field sessions include analysis at sites such as Drayton Hall, Magnolia Plantation, Aiken-Rhett House, Local Graveyards, Old City Jail, the H.L. Hunley Submarine, the Sea Islands, and the City of Savannah.

"This fall, preservationists from around the world will flock to Charleston. We look forward to welcoming them to our City," said Craig Bennett, Conference Co-Chair.

"By meshing APT paper sessions and PTN demonstrations, our two organizations can fully explore the concept of collaboration while providing Conference participants with a complete picture for each topic, from conservation problem to preservation solution," said Simeon Warren, Conference Co-Chair.

The Association for Preservation Technology International (APT) is a cross-disciplinary, membership organization dedicated to promoting the best technology for conserving historic structures and their settings. APT members, who hail from more than 30 countries, include preservationists, architects, engineers, conservators, consultants, contractors, crafts persons, curators, developers, educators, historians, landscape architects, students, technicians, and other persons directly involved in the application of methods and materials to maintain, conserve, and protect historic structures and sites for future use and appreciation.
