Lecture: Museums in the 21st Century: New Audiences, Old Values in the Arabian Gulf

Following the arrival of extraordinary wealth to Gulf states and nations, there as been an expansive cultural development in the region. This illustrated lecture will tour many of the important museums and other institutions that are being planned and built in Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain. The lecture will show how the leadership in each Gulf state is approaching their cultural program, and how the local population is reacting to the impact of them.
Dr. Roger Mandle is currently the Senior Advisor to the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Qatar Museums Authority. He was for four years the Executive Director and Chief Museum Officer at QMA. Prior to moving to Qatar, he was President of the Rhode Island School of Design for 15 years; before coming to Rhode Island he was Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the National Gallery of Art. Locally, Dr. Mandle serves as a trustee of the Newport Restoration Foundation.
