Battle of Franklin Trust's Hands on History

August 15, 2012
Battle of Franklin Trust's Hands on History
The Battle of Franklin Trust is putting on a monthly program for kids 5-10 yrs. Classes will be held at The Carter House or Carnton Plantation and the children will experience different aspects of the 1860s and Civil War life. Ever wonder how butter was made? Or what kids did before video games? Participants will find out first-hand. Each class will focus on a specific area of one of these historic sites which may include a story, craft, or hands-on project. Parents will need to RSVP for this event at least 24-hours ahead of time so proper arrangements can be made by the Trust.

August 15- Wednesday at Carnton - 9:30-10:30am ($10): Old Time Toys No TVs, no PlayStations, no cell phones. What did kids do for fun? Children will learn about antique toys and make some of their own.

September 15-Saturday at Carter House - 9:30-10:30am ($10): Biscuits and Butter Venture into the original kitchen of The Carter House to discuss cooking and food along with having a snack of biscuits and butter that the children will churn by hand.

October 27-Saturday at Carnton - 9:30-10:30 am ($10): Pumpkin Patch Pumpkins will be picked from the Carnton Plantation pumpkin patch to decorate, bake and eat.

November 3- Saturday at Carnton - 9:30-10:30am ($10): 147th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin  Our annual Blue and Gray Days provide so much to see and so many people to talk to like Abraham Lincoln, soldiers, and more. Talk with reenactors and learn what was important about the battle that happened in Franklin.

December 15-Saturday at Carnton - 9:30-10:30am ($15): Christmas in Carrie’s Attic Christmas in the 1860s wasn’t quite what it is today so children will learn what traditions were practiced then and read T’was The Night Before Christmas. Once in Carrie’s attic children will also make Victorian Christmas decorations.

The Battle of Franklin Trust is a 501(c)3 management corporation acting on behalf of Franklin’s battlefield sites to contribute to a greater understanding and enrich the visitor experience of the November 30, 1864 battle. It’s organized for the charitable and educational purposes of preserving, restoring, maintaining and interpreting the properties, artifacts and documents related to the battle so as to preserve an important part of the nation’s history.
