August 31 - September 2, 2012 |
The Friends of the Museum of the Plains Indian is co-hosting an American Indian Sign Language Conference in Browning August 31-September 2. Other hosts include the University of Tennessee and Blackfeet Community College, with support of the Blackfeet Nation, Browning Area Chamber of Commerce, Humanities Montana, and others. The Conference is open to anyone interested in Indian Sign Language, in addition to the registered signers being documented. The Conference will include formal documentation of American Indian Sign Languge, especially on Sunday, September 2. There will be a commemoration of the 1930 Plains Indian Sign Language Conference also held in Browning at the Museum of the Plains Indian on Saturday morning, September 1. Saturday afternoon there will be concurrent children's activities involving signing, and signed tours of the Museum of the Plains Indian exhibits. In the late afternoon there will be a Signing Free for All, with all modern Native and non-Native Indian sign language signers having an opportunity to share stories and experiences. That evening, pending funding, there will a public dinner. Jack and Mariah Gladstone will be performing during the commemoration activities and in the evening, with their innovative integrated sign talk/music/lyrical presentations. The Browning Marketplace will be active both Friday and Saturday of that weekend, and there will be book and CD signing and sales. Come join us!
