New Bedford Preservation Society’s Annual Meeting
September 27, 2012 |
The public is cordially invited to attend the New Bedford Preservation Society’s 38th Annual Meeting on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at 7 p.m., at the Levi Standish House, 20 South Sixth Street, New Bedford. After the brief business meeting, historian Bruce Barnes will present an illustrated program highlighting “The Colonial Revival Residence in New Bedford, 1880-1930.”
New Bedford has a stellar reputation in architecture for its Whaling and Victorian era mansions. However, its collection of homes in the Colonial Revival Style (Shingle, Georgian, Craftsman, Foursquare), built during the prosperous years of the textile industry, dominate the current cityscape of New Bedford as no other. Hear about the development of signature city neighborhoods such as Clinton Place, Morelands Terrace, Clasky Park and Hawthorn Street. See the variations of the style by architects with national reputations as well as those by talented local designers who thrived during this important era of New Bedford’s history.
A reception with light refreshments will follow the business meeting and program. Free.
