Barn Again! Saving Vintage Barn Workshop

September 14-15, 2012

Good farmers know never to waste anything, and that includes old farm buildings. Across Indiana, barns of all ages and types have been rehabbed for modern farming and other uses. On Sept. 14-15, Indiana Landmarks brings its BARN AGAIN! workshop to Madison to help owners maximize use of vintage barns.

Experts offer practical solutions for maintaining, rehabbing, and adapting old barns for today’s needs. The workshop is based on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s BARN AGAIN! program.

On Friday, Sept. 14, Duncan Campbell of Ball State University will cover Indiana barn styles and discuss his own barn adaptive reuse project. Rick Collins of Trillium Dell Timberworks in Knoxville, Illinois, will discuss barn rehab and timber framing basics. A case study from nearby Stream Cliff Herb Farm in Commiskey, Indiana, will show how a variety of agricultural buildings were repurposed at the regional tourism destination.

Hanover College professor Darrin Rubino shows a method of dating barns through analysis the wood timbers. Rhonda Deeg of Historic Madison and Anne Fairchild, Director of Education at the Lanier Mansion State Historic Site will discuss results of an outbuildings survey in the Madison area that documented timber frame carriage barns and outbuildings found in the alleys and backyards in Madison’s National Historic Landmark District. The day ends with a tour of warehouse carriage barns owned by Historic Madison.

On Saturday, Sept. 15, participants who register for the second day of BARN AGAIN! will tour five privately-owned historic barns exhibiting a range of types and construction techniques. The day includes lunch at Moose Lodge and the striking Cravenhurst Barn on its property. Participants in the Saturday tour will drive their own vehicles to each site in a caravan format led by tour organizers.

The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 and 15 with registration opening at 8:00 a.m. Cost of BARN AGAIN! is $60 per person, which covers lectures, lunches, barn tours, an information packet and an annual membership in Indiana Landmarks.

The Friday sessions take place at West Street Arts Center, 301 West Street. On Saturday, the barn tour depart from the Madison Farmer’s Market at the Broadway Fountain. Cost for Friday only is $45 (also includes annual membership); Saturday barn tour only is $25 per person. There are discounted prices for members of Indiana Landmarks.
