Hot Metal Flows for First Time in 30 Years at Carrie Furnaces
September 15 - October 13, 2012 |
For the first time in 30 years, molten iron will be flowing at the National Historic Landmark Carrie Blast Furnaces in Rankin. The site will play host to a Hot Metal Happening iron casting from 9 AM to 1 PM Sept. 15 during the Carrie Furnaces Hard Hat Tours. Sponsored by Rivers of Steel, the event coincides withGrandparents Month festivities with Highmark at the blast furnace site Saturday, including an oral history booth and giveaways. Utilizing the flow of molten metal, artist Ed Parrish will smelt recycled iron scrap and cast it into a variety of shapes in front of visitors to the Carrie Furnace site using a cupola furnace. Iron will be tapped from the furnace and poured into molds. The interactive demonstration will engage and educate visitors about one of the most relevant and historical industrial processes that made Pittsburgh the iron and steel-making capital of the world! Besides the Hot Metal Happening, ticket price includes tours that begin at 9 AM and run every half hour through noon. On the self-paced tour, former steelworkers and docents will be stationed throughout the site to explain the iron-making process and share their personal stories. The iron casting event will also occur Oct. 13 during the last self-paced Carrie Furnaces Hard Hat tour of the 2012 season.
