New Bedford Preservation Society's Second Cemetery Tour (Focusing on the Civil War Period)

October 21, 2012

On Sunday, October 21, 2012, the New Bedford Preservation Society will present its second cemetery tour focusing on the Civil War period. The first tour was held at New Bedford's Rural Cemetery on August 19, 2012 (cast pictured here).  These popular tours feature historic portrayals in period costume which depict New Bedford’s famous and not-so-famous at grave sites along the tour route.

New Bedford Preservation Society volunteers will provide guided walking tours leaving from the Parker Street entrance of the Oak Grove Cemetery every 15 minutes beginning at 1 p.m., with the last tour leaving at 2:30 p.m. The approximately one-hour walking tour will highlight twenty graves within the cemetery.  Rain date is October 28.

Cemeteries have been called outdoor museums, windows to the culture of the past.  They not only serve as a resting place for the departed, they tell us much about the times in which they lived.  The Civil War era will be brought to life on this tour with “voices from the past" recounting their life stories during this important time in history.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased at the Oak Grove Cemetery gate on the day of tour. Starting location for the tour will be the north side gate entrance on Parker Street (between Liberty and Caroline Streets). A $3 discount will be given to New Bedford Preservation Society members.

A portion of the proceeds generated from the tour will be donated to maintain the integrity of the city’s historic cemeteries, with the remaining proceeds applied to the society’s ongoing projects, such as New Bedford Re-Leaf, the Historic Marker Program, reprinting of Architectural Walking Tour brochures, semi-annual historic house tours, summer guided walking tours, lectures and other efforts.

Call the New Bedford Preservation Society at 508-997-6425 or visit www.nbpreservationsociety.org for further information. The tour is non-handicap accessible.

P. S.  On the "Naughty and Notorious" AHA! Night, October 11, two "appearances" from the Rural Cemetery will take place in the side yard of the Seamen's Bethel. Hear the life stories of the notorious Captain Daniel Drayton and Lucinda Bush, portrayed by Society President Mark P. Fuller and board member Jan da Silva, respectively.   A couple of performances are scheduled, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Society members will be on hand to talk about upcoming events, including the Oak Grove Cemetery Tour and Holiday House Tour on December 8 and 9.
