California Preservation Awards

October 13, 2012

San Francisco, CA (September 13, 2014) -- The California Preservation Foundation (CPF) has announced the 2012 winners for the prestigious  Preservation Design Awards (PDAs) who will be honored at the annual California Preservation Awards on Saturday, October 13.

The Preservation Design Awards will be presented during a gala event on Saturday, October 13, 2012, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM at the AT&T Center, 1150 South Olive Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015.  Tickets are $120 for individuals and $85 for CPF members.  To purchase tickets, become a member or support CPF, visit CPF’s website atwww.californiapreservation.org or call CPF’s office at 415-495-0349.

Through its Preservation Design Awards program, CPF seeks to honor  those who have achieved the highest level of craftsmanship in certain areas of historic preservation, in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.  Over 450 projects have received this prestigious award during the program’s 29-year history which was begun in 1983.

“The annual Design Awards program is our most important means of publicly recognizing outstanding work of California’s historic preservation industry and also educating the public about the significant role that preservation projects perform in enhancing the quality of life in California communities,” says Cindy Heitzman, Executive Director, California Preservation Foundation.

The winning projects are selected by a jury of top professionals working in the fields of architecture, engineering, planning, historians, as well as renowned architecture critics and journalists.  The juries making the selections are responsible for maintaining the high standards established by their predecessors in selecting individuals and firms who have furthered to a notable degree the purposes of the profession, consistent with the mission of CPF.  The 2012 Preservation Design Awards jury was chaired by Ann Gray, FAIA (Balcony Press, Glendale); Alan Hess, AIA (Architecture Critic, San Jose Mercury News, Irvine); Mitchell Schwarzer, PhD (California College of the Arts, San Francisco), Andrew Wolfram, AIA (Perkins + Will, San Francisco); and, Margarita Wuellner, PhD (PCR, Santa Monica).

Administration of the CPF Preservation Design Awards is under the jurisdiction of the Awards Committee, appointed by the President and approved by the Board of Trustees.

"The jury had a lot of fun finding common ground on the vast array of projects and studies we considered”, expressed Ann Gray, FAIA, 2011 PDA Jury Chair.  “Each year it is reassuring to note the large quantity of successes achieved in a field that often mourns notable failures. This year’s crop of entries was characterized by rich cultural backstories that made the best work more challenging. These winning projects will make multi-dimensional contributions to their communities for generations to come."

The winner of each award is selected according to the criteria of the particular award category.  The categories include:
- Preservation
- Rehabilitation
- Restoration
- Reconstruction
- Contextual Infill
- Cultural Resources Studies/Reports
- Craftsmanship/Preservation Technology
- Archaeology and Interpretive Exhibits
