Newburyport is a Work of Art; Why its Architecture is Rare and Irreplaceable

October 28, 2012

You may have heard over the past months the question:  Why does Newburyport need historic building protections?  The Newburyport Preservation Trust cordially invites you to hear and see a compelling answer. Author and architect Jonathan Hale will speak at the Custom House Maritime Museum on “Newburyport is a Work of Art”.

Jonathan Hale has written and lectured extensively about Newburyport in his work as a consultant to other cities across the country.  His book, The Old Way of Seeing (Houghton Mifflin) a Publishers Weekly Best Book of 1994, uses Newburyport to show the very high level of design that was once widespread and has now become almost a lost art.  Mr. Hale was the developer as well as the architect of several historic property renovations in and near Boston, and he has written design guidelines for new communities in Spokane, WA and Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. Jonathan Hale has degrees in architecture from Harvard and the Boston Architectural College and he is based in Waltham MA.

“Everywhere one goes in Newburyport, one senses there are discoveries to be made…What sets it apart today is its completeness; everywhere in Newburyport the old way of seeing predominates.”
– The Old Way of Seeing, Jonathan Hale

The lecture is scheduled for Sunday, October 28th, 2012.  His presentation will be a practical guide, illustrated with photographs he has taken of Newburyport during the 40 years he has visited and admired our city.  Mr. Hale looks forward to answering your questions and to meeting you during the reception following his presentation.

Presentation: 4:00 – 5:00 pm. Reception follows.  $10.00 donation requested at the door.  For more information on this and other Newburyport Preservation Trust events, visit www.nbptpreservationtrust.org.
