Power of Preservation Prom
October 25, 2012 |
San Antonio is ripe with extraordinary history and culture…it’s what tourists seek and natives cherish. But constant nourishment of our history takes effort and capital. In order to raise these imperative dollars, the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) will present the “Power of Preservation PROMenade” on October 25, 2012. Led by the City’s Historic Preservation Officer Shanon Peterson and chaired by volunteer community leaders Andi Rodriguez, Dru Van Steenberg and Theresa Vargas Wyatt and a stellar committee, the event will unfold at the historic Mission Road Power Plant, courtesy of CPS Energy. The evening will exemplify the importance of the past to the present and the future with a focus on historic preservation as cultural, economic and environmental sustainability. This structure, which once illuminated San Antonio, will showcase the “Power of Preservation.”
The Preservation PROM is no ordinary gala; offering a multi-level experience which encourages strolling and interaction, it will feature San Antonio history themed amusements and entertainment. The evening will also take time to honor legendary preservation heroes in the community and will recognize preservation projects that make San Antonio a great place to visit and wonderful place to live. The attire of “Come as your Favorite Period in Time” or black tie will give attendees the option of donning festive historical or present day dress…certain to inspire great conversation and great photo-ops. The party will continue into the night with a “Preservation Pachanga” serving up fresh tunes, food and beverage.
The Purpose:
Enjoyable evening aside, the purpose of this PROM and public outreach campaign is to reveal and inspire the preservationist in each of us and demonstrate the power of preservation for economic development, walkability and revitalization. The proceeds will support the City of San Antonio’s Office of Historic Preservation education and outreach programs, with a particular focus on those program
- The S.T.A.R. (Students Together Achieving Revitalization) Project provides a proactive approach to arresting further deterioration of local historic districts as well as providing a hands-on learning experience for students. Proceeds from the PROM will be used to build capacity of the program and expand its reach.
- OHP also operates an Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resale Revolving Fund and an Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation Loan Fund. Proceeds from the PROM will serve to expand and enhance both programs which directly breathe new life into struggling properties and assist in neighborhood revitalization.
