Peg-Leg Pete's Scavenger Hunt (St. Mark's Historic Landmark Fund)
November 3, 2012 |
Each year, we create a new set of clues for a Scavenger Hunt of the neighborhood that grew on the footprint of Peter Stuyvesant's original farm. Based on the information found in our Peg-Leg Pete's Bouwerie Tour series, the layers of history that we have covered in previous years are: from 1651 to when St. Mark's Church was constructed in 1799, and when the area was bustling with dance clubs, meeting houses, and theaters in the 1910s, 20s & 30s.
This year, we are adding the 1960s and 1970s, when the area around the East Village became a center of New York City's counterculture. A few examples in this year's Groovy Tour: unforgettable rock & roll performances at Stanley's Bar, Fillmore East, and Electric Circus; scintillating poetry readings at Cafe La Metro, Les Deux Megots, and the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church; political activism at Tompkins Square Park and Losaida Avenue (Avenue C), and much more.
Sign up as a team or individual in this year's Scavenger Hunt, which will draw clues from all of the Bowerie Tour's as well as visual clues in the buildings and landscapes of the East Village, Gramercy, and Alphabet City. The Hunt is a part of 5 Dutch Days, an annual cultural event celebrating the influence of Dutch arts and culture in New York City.
