The house, completed in 1892, is one of the few extant buildings that displays the combined talents of these world-renowned architects. It is considered a turning point in modern residential design and Frank Lloyd Wright famously called it “the first modern house in America.”
The Gala is slated for the evening of Saturday, November 10, 2012, and will be held at the Racquet Club, a Gold Coast institution with its own rich history. Funds from the gala will support SAH’s mission and help SAH position itself as leader in understanding and interpreting the built environment.
At this year’s Gala, SAH will launch new awards honoring excellence in design-related professions. As Executive Director Pauline Saliga notes, “The SAH mission of making man-made structures and landscapes relevant to contemporary cultural life is increasingly important as a growing percentage of the global population is living in cities. Our Annual Awards for Excellence celebrate pivotal contributions to designing the future made in the fields of architecture, landscape design, urban planning, preservation and public education.”
The awards roster includes:
The SAH Award for Excellence in Design, Planning and Sustainability
Honoring Phillip Enquist of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for scripting a Vision for the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence River Region that addresses the phenomenal increase in human population, the impacts of agriculture and urbanization, and the threats of climate change on this, the world’s largest fresh water basin. The Charnley-Persky House was restored by SOM in the 1980s to serve as the location for SOM’s Chicago Institute for Architecture & Urbanism. Today, due in no small part to SOM, Charnley-Persky House is a bellwether for preservation of the unique history of Chicago’s Gold Coast.
The SAH Award for Excellence in Architectural Media
Honoring Gwendolyn Wright, Professor of Architecture & Planning at Columbia University and popular host of the PBS ”History Detectives” series, and WTTW host Geoffrey Baer who currently is filming a nationally-syndicated program, “Ten Buildings that Changed America.”
The SAH Award for Excellence in Architectural Conservation
Honoring architect John Eifler, of John Eifler Associates, for his continued restoration of Charnley-Persky House and for his demonstration that historic structures should incorporate green initiatives.
