Battle of Franklin Trust Commemorates Black History Month and Unveils Newly Discovered Photographs
February 7, 2013 |
The Battle of Franklin Trust is hosting an evening exhibition featuring newly discovered photographs and noted historian and author, Rick Warwick. The unveiling of the photographs will be held at Carnton Plantation’s Fleming Center on Thursday, February 7 at 5 p.m., followed by Warwick’s presentation at 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend both events free of charge.
The recently uncovered photographs show the Franklin battlefield and other sites, taken in 1899 and 1904. They show the battlefield and various locations in ways that have never been seen. Some of the photos include The Carter House, the McGavock Confederate Cemetery at Carnton, and the Cleburnecenotaph. Others show sweeping views from Privet Knob, as well as new perspectives on Fort Granger. The photo exhibit will run from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Rick Warwick, well-known Williamson County historian and author, will offer a presentation on the historic African-American community that developed in Franklin after the Civil War. He will be discussing the Natchez community and Hard Bargain, and will also discuss the McLemore House. The talk, which begins at 6 p.m., will last about 45 minutes and there will be a question and answer session to follow.
“We are excited to offer two very special events in one evening,” said Battle of Franklin Trust COO Eric A. Jacobson. “We are very excited about the photo unveiling, and we are honored that Rick Warwick will be joining us to commemorate some of the history of Franklin’s African-American community.”
