Ocean State Mementos
March 28, 2013 |
On March 28 Historic New England and Preserve Rhode Island present Ocean State Mementos: Jewelry from Rhode Island at the historic Governor Henry Lippitt House Museum.
Join Historic New England Associate Curator Laura Johnson for an illustrated lecture on the history of jewelry in Rhode Island and the critical role Rhode Island jewelry manufacturing played in American jewelry production. Johnson’s lecture begins with an overview of Historic New England's extensive jewelry collection, which reflects the rich history of jewelry making in New England beginning with individual goldsmiths in the eighteenth century and ending with the large costume jewelry companies of the twentieth century. The program then highlights pieces from the collection that were treasured by Rhode Island families or produced in Rhode Island, and also presents new research on the Ocean State's jewelry industry.
Highlights include a mid-1800s tortoiseshell brooch made by Lawrence Rhoades for his wife Ann after he returned to Newport from the Civil War; a stunning green pendant made around 1930 by the Little Nemo Company of Providence; a pair of mid-twentieth century earrings owned by Ise Gropius, wife of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius, that were made by students from Rhode Island School of Design; and a bracelet from the Chace family of Rhode Island.
The program, on March 28 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.is free to members of Historic New England and Preserve Rhode Island. Tickets for the general public are $5. Please call 617-994-5959 to register. Registration is required.
