Mildred G. Burrage, Painter and Preservationist

September 15, 2013

Earle Shettleworth, director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and Maine State Historian, tells the story of local artist and historic preservationist Mildred G. Burrage. Mildred studied art in France before World War I, met Monet at Giverny, and continued to paint throughout her life. A passionate historic preservationist, she founded the Lincoln County Cultural and Historical Society with Frances Sortwell in 1954. That organization was responsible for preserving the 1761 Pownalborough Courthouse in Dresden, the 1811 Old Jail, and the 1809 Old Academy Building in Wiscasset, where Mildred established the Maine Art Gallery, one of the earliest galleries to display the work of Maine artists.

Sunday, September 15, 3:00 - 4:30 p.m. $10. Registration is recommended.
