One Times Square: A Century of Change at the Crossroads of the World

February 21, 2013
One Times Square: A Century of Change at the Crossroads of the World
Join PPS as we kick off our spring program calendar with illustrator Joe McKendry, whose work has appeared in Vanity Fair, the New York Times, and Time Magazine. In 2012, McKendry published a beautiful new book on the history of New York's most famous intersection. One Times Square: A Century of Change at the Crossroads of the World offers historically accurate illustrations of the area's evolution, from its humble beginning as a dirt path known as Bloomingdale Road to the construction of the New York Times' headquarters in 1904 to the tourist-friendly playland that it is today. On Thursday evening, he will discuss this book along with his earlier work, including renderings of the Turks Head Building, Friedrich St. Florian's WWII Memorial in Washington DC, and his 2005 book, Beneath the Streets of Boston: Building America's First Subway.

This lecture will take place at the Governor Henry Lippitt House - 199 Hope Street, Providence.

5:30 pm - reception
6:00 pm - presentation

Free for PPS & PRI members and $10 for non-members. Please visit our website for details or telephone 401-831-7440
