Oral History Workshop 'Labor and Workplace' @ Oregon History Center
April 27, 2013 |
Jim Strassmaier and Michael O'Rourke are presenting an oral history workshop. Though it has a focus on "Labor and Workplace," the workshop will be beneficial to anyone interested in oral histories.
Sponsored by:
- Pacific NW Labor History Association (OLOHP*)
- Labor Education and Research Center (LERC), University of Oregon
- Oregon Historical Society (OHS)
Presenters: Jim Strassmaier and Michael O'Rourke, former OHS oral historians.
Time: 10am - 2:30pm
This workshop offers opportunity to study the basics of conducting an oral history, or to refresh and improve interviewing skills already acquired.
Larger purpose of the workshop is to directly promote the 'live' documenting of labor history, adding to the significant fund of recordings in the 'Labor and Workplace' collection of the OHS Sound Recordings Archive. We will do all we can to help participants follow-through with interviewing a chosen subject.
'Labor history' is broadly conceived, extending the reach not only to experiences of union rank and file (to date the emphasis has been largely on union leaders), but also to worklife recollections of 'regular' citizens, who thereby often become significant inspiration to members of family. The Oregon Labor Oral History Program places high value on incorporating so-called 'personal history.'
The plan of presentation moves from general and theoretical to the increasingly practical:
- theory/nature of the 'new' documenting form
- research and preparation
- interviewing technique(s)
- proceeding in steps
- equipment tech points
- archival deposit
- public presentation.
The workshop will finish with live interviewing demonstration.
The cost: $15 ($10 with commitment to undertake a labor/workplace oral history).
Early registration recommended:

The basic biographical approach of the workshop will serve a broad range of interests.
History of workplace is an important The labor theme comports readily with the basic biographical approach of the OLOH Program: every personal history has a major worklife component.
With attention to both union and workplace the basic approach of OLOH is biographical, audience including family tradition. Resulting oral histories will be welcomed to entry in the OHS Sound Recordings Collection.
