The Forensic Pedestrian: Discovering Vestiges of the Past on Urban Walks
Saturday, April 27, 2013 10:00 am–11:30 am
Members: $10 General Public: $18
Hidden urban stairs, river cobbles thrown high atop mountain slopes, street trees that began as seeds carried north in a saddle bag from the California gold rush, old streetcar districts recharging with new commercial lives, a convent and orphanage whose architect was not only a woman but a nun. All these small and large elements of our history in plain sight constitute a rich vein for a forensic pedestrian to explore.
Laura O. Foster shows her favorite out-of-the-way places in Portland, Oregon City, Forest Grove and other intriguing locales. She is the author of Portland Hill Walks: Twenty Explorations in Parks and Neighborhoods; Portland City Walks: Twenty Explorations In and Around Portland, Metro’s Walk There!, The Portland Stairs Book, and Lake Oswego: Images of America.
She writes for Metro about natural areas and regional trails and, to satisfy her inner forensic pedestrian, leads monthly walks for the Multnomah Athletic Club.
