Historic House Museums in the 21st Century: Preservation Month Seminar

We invite you to join us on Saturday, May 18th for the San Antonio Conservation Society’s 2013 Historic Preservation Seminar: Historic House Museums in the 21st Century. Learn about how house museums are positioning themselves for new audiences and enthusiastically educating younger generations. Participants will tour house museums in the morning (or if they prefer, during regular museum hours on Friday, May 17) then convene at the River House (509 King William) for an afternoon of panels and discussion with nationally renowned experts and practitioners. A reception in The Steves Homestead will follow.
Featuring panels of local and regional experts, the seminar will focus on house museums and their importance. Advance registration is required and includes the following:
• 10 a.m. – House Museum Tours (participants may choose to tour any of the
house museums during museum operating hours on Friday, May 17, if they prefer):
o Casa Navarro State Historic Site
o Spanish Governor’s Palace
o Villa Finale
o The Steves Homestead
• 12 p.m. – Registration and Lunch at the River House
• 12:30 p.m. - Rethinking Panel

o Dr. Patrick Butler, Historian, Vice President, San Antonio Historical Association

• 1:15 p.m. – Reinterpreting Panel:
o Hal Simon, Interpretive Planner, Texas Historical Commission
o Colleen Swain, Redevelopment Officer, Central City Development Office
• 2 p.m. – Repurposing Panel:
o Denise Alexander, Director of Museums & Museum Programs, Galveston Historical Foundation
o Dwayne Jones, Executive Director, Galveston Historical Foundation
o Meg Nowack, Manager of Curatorial Resources, Villa Finale
• 2:45 p.m. – Concluding Speaker:
o Jane Lewis, Executive Director, Villa Finale
• Reception in the Steves Homestead to follow the conclusion of the seminar.
Early registration at a discounted price is April 8 - May 8. Space permitting, regular registration will be available after May 8.
