The Gathering - Restoring The Slave Building
October 13, 2013 |
In recent months the Bellamy Mansion Museum has begun the final phase of restoration on the rare urban slave building on site.
On Sunday, October 13th we will hold a community event -The Gathering. We plan to celebrate years of preservation efforts and remember the lives of those who built and lived here.
This building, like the mansion, was built by highly skilled enslaved and freed African American laborers. As we progress we're discovering how they worked, their building techniques, and we're finding more about the lives of the slaves who lived on the site when building was finished.
Take a look at our blog, which is updated regularly as the work goes on. We're uncovering the locally fired bricks, handmade nails, major beams held together with wood pegs, corbeled hearths and arched tunnels in the privy pit.
Save the date for The Gathering on October 13th and join us to see historic preservation in action.
