Growing in the Garden: Be a Friend to Birds

December 3, 2013

Macculloch Hall Historical Museum presents its hands-on program for preschool-age children “Growing in the Garden” this December. This program meets twice a month on Tuesday afternoons, to visit the garden at Macculloch Hall and explore environmental topics through a story, walk in the garden and art projects.

“Be a Friend to Birds”
On Tuesday, December 3 from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Macculloch Hall Historical Museum welcomes 3 to 5 year olds and their caregivers to come and explore the garden in search of backyard birds.  Who will we find in the garden—Cardinals, Black-capped Chickadees, or Downy Woodpeckers?  After a story to learn more about these feathered friends, children will make a winter bird treat using oranges, cranberries, and seeds to take home.

“Winter Tales About Trees”
Children will hear the tale about the winter battle between the Holly King and the Oak King, where the winning tree gains control of the yuletide season.  Children ages 3 to 5
years old and their caregivers can come to Macculloch Hall Historical Museum on Tuesday, December 17 from 1:15 to 2 p.m. and hear tales about trees and find out which tree wins the battle for winter.  After the story, children will make a paper holly garland to use to decorate their homes and visit the garden to see the Museum’s holly and oak trees.

“Growing in the Garden” is a year-round program meeting twice a month at Macculloch Hall Historical Museum.  The program lasts 45 minutes from 1:15pm – 2pm.  There are limited spaces, pre-registration is required.  The cost for the program is $8 per pair (child and caregiver) for Museum members and $12 per pair for non-members.  There is a $5 discount for pre-paid registration on four sessions.
