Old + New: Designing New Buildings in Historic Settings
September 19, 2013 |
Pasadena Heritage is proud to present an illustrated lecture by Steven W. Semes, Old + New: Designing New Buildings in Historic Settings, on Thursday, September 19, 2013. Semes, a practicing architect for over thirty years and now associate professor at the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture and academic director of its Rome Studies Program, will discuss his research on the topic and concepts from his book The Future of the Past: A Conservation Ethic for Architecture, Urbanism, and Historic Preservation.
Pasadena's unique character and sense of place includes numerous historic districts and individual historic landmarks, among countless other eligible historic reserouces that have yet to be officially designated. The question of how to approach the design of new buildings in historic settings is one that property owners, community residents, city staff, advisory commissions, and elected officials must often grapple with. Pasadena Heritage has invited architect and professor Steven W. Semes to share his research on this very question, including approaches to achieving compatibility and differentiation of new construction in historic settings that he has identified in cities throughout the United States and abroad.
The event will take place at the Pasadena Central Library, located at 285 East Walnut Street, Pasadena, CA 91101 in the Pasadena Civic Center National Register Historic District. A reception with light refreshments will take place from 6:00 - 6:45 pm on the Children's Patio, followed by the lecture in the Wright Auditorium from 7:00 - 8:00 pm, with time for questions from the audience until 8:30 pm.
Through the co-sponsorship of the Pasadena Public Library, this event is FREE and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required. Seating is limited to the first 190 attendees.
