In late 1857, before Oregon was even a state, leading Portland pioneer and merchant Henry W. Corbett placed an order for close to 7,000 rolls of wallpaper from the Croton Mfg. Company of New York. Loaded aboard the clipper ship “Ocean Express” (built in 1854), it took 124 days to reach San Francisco around the Horn. And that was just the beginning of its journey...After discovering a rare record of this remarkable transaction in the Warshaw Collection at the Smithsonian Institution, wallpaper installer and researcher Robert M. Kelly began piecing together the stages in this early mercantile supply chain, revealing the untold story – presented here for the very first time – of wallpaper distribution in the antebellum Pacific Northwest, from printing in East Coast factories through shipment and distribution to retailers throughout the Oregon Territory, to installation in the wood-frame cabins and more substantial residences of the region.

Wallpaper is enjoying a resurgence of interest and creativity today, from humble ranches to the high-style homes of the celebrity elite. But you'd be hard-pressed to find a more important address than 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Join Robert M. Kelly, paperhanger to seven Presidents and one First Lady (admittedly, not all of them alive at the time), as he takes us from his own blue-collar beginnings to the Blue Room, and get a glimpse of the backstory of wallpaper along the way.
This presentation will explore some of the public and private rooms of the White House, reveal the paper treasures that hang on its oft-redecorated walls, recount stories of hard-won successes and near disaster, and even pass on a few tricks of the trade for hanging wallpaper in oval rooms – in case yours is the same shape as the President's. Don't miss this one-time event.
About Robert M. Kelly
Born the second of ten children in an Irish Catholic family in working-class Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Robert M. Kelly attended the U.S. School of Professional Paperhanging in 1977 at the age of 27, launching a 35-year career as a professional installer.
By 1986 Robert was specializing in installing antique and reproduction wallpaper, and parlayed this into a scholarly approach to wallpaper and paperhanging. His work has taken him from Andrew Jackson's Hermitage to the Blue Room of the White House and beyond.
Robert has just released his monograph “The Backstory of Wallpaper: Paper-Hangings 1650-1750” to critical acclaim. He lives in Lee, Massachusetts, and often writes about historic wallpaper. He can be found online via his website and blog at http://wallpaperscholarblog.blogspot.com/.
