Lotz House Announces Battleground Tour of the Atlanta Campaign

(Franklin, Tenn.)—January 23, 2014 --- The Lotz House Civil War museum has teamed up with two notable historians Thomas Cartwright and Greg Biggs for an exclusive
battleground tour of the Atlanta Campaign on Thursday, March 27 through Sunday, March 30, 2014. This is one of the Lotz House initiatives as the site commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin held November 30, 1864.
This commemorative tour, which is limited to only 50 people, will kick off in Ringgold, Georgia. The tour will encompass all of the north Georgia battlefields between Ringgold and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield including Resaca (including newly opened
portions), Dalton, Cassville, New Hope Church, Pickett's Mill, Dallas and the first and second Kennesaw Lines. Many of these fields will feature several stops at each. Also part of the tour will be several sites of the famous Great Locomotive Chase of 1862 and the famous engine The General.
Wednesday, March 26, participants will gather in Franklin, Tenn. for a lecture on the first portion of the Atlanta Campaign. The tour leaves at 8 a.m. the next morning Thursday, March 27 and will return to Franklin Sunday, March 30 in the afternoon.
The tour includes three hotel nights with breakfast, admissions to the Tunnel Hill Civil War and Railroad Museum and the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History (home of The General) plus Pickett's Mill State Park, one of America's most pristine Civil War battlefields. Each participant will receive a full set of campaign maps for each site. An evening lecture is also planned during the tour by notable Atlanta Campaign historians.
Cavalier Tours of Alabama is hosting the event and providing luxury motor coach transportation. The tour rates are $495 for a single person per room, $390 for double per room and $360 for triple per room.
Greg Biggs is the president of the Clarksville, TN Civil War Roundtable and an officer of the Nashville and Bowling Green CWRTs. A student of military history for more than 45 years, Biggs grew up in Georgia and has studied the Atlanta Campaign for nearly 30 years. He conducted his first Atlanta tour in 1993 and has done them regularly ever since. He also offers tours of the Fort Donelson Campaign; Where The River Campaigns Began - Cairo, IL to Columbus/Belmont, KY and the Tullahoma Campaign of 1863. Greg is a former Associate Editor of Blue & Gray magazine and has had several articles in that publication as well as essays in North-South Trader, Civil War Regiments journal, Citizens Companion and a chapter in a recent book on the Tullahoma Campaign. Greg is also a scholar of Civil War flags and has been published in essays and books on the topic.
Thomas Y. Cartwright is known as one of the leading authorities on the Civil War and the Battle of Franklin. He frequently appears on various documentaries for the History Channel, A&E, Travel Channel, CNN, Discovery, and Preservation Channel. For many years, he has lectured throughout most of the United States for Civil War Round Tables, corporations, preservation groups and heritage organizations. In addition, Cartwright authored several published articles and essays. He is currently authoring two books and he conducts battlefield walking tours of the Battle of Franklin from the Lotz House.
A longtime fixture of The Carter House in Franklin, Tennessee, Thomas has also conducted numerous tours of Civil War sites in the Western Theater from Shiloh to Stones River with a special focus on the Tennessee Campaign of 1864. He is an expert on bringing the tales of individuals alive during his tours and his passion is legendary.
