The Rise & Fall of Penn Station: A Screening Party

February 18, 2014

Are you in the midst of the winter doldrums? Shake it off with a screening party for the American Experience documentary The Rise and Fall of Penn Station at Professor Thom's Bar & Restaurant! This special screening will be a live viewing of the documentary's PBS premiere on February 18th. Join fellow preservationists to watch the film and discuss the role of Pennsylvania Station in preservation history!

Proclaimed one of the wonders of the world upon its opening in 1910, the original Pennsylvania Station was an engineering feat and a monument to New York City's aspirations as a world capital. But just 53 years later the McKim, Mead & White masterpiece was demolished, an act that prompted widespread support for the passage of New York City's Landmarks Law. The Rise and Fall of Penn Station, a new PBS documentary co-produced by filmmakers Randall MacLowry and Michael Rossi of The Film Posse, Inc., brings to life the epic story of the doomed station. Primary focus is given to the construction of the unprecedented network of tunnels under the Hudson and East Rivers that connected the Pennsylvania Railroad with New York City, knitting together the entire eastern half of the United States. This film was produced as part of the American Experience series, the longest-running and most-watched history series on television. Acclaimed by viewers and critics alike, American Experience has been hailed as "peerless" (The Wall Street Journal), "the most consistently enriching program on television" (Chicago Tribune), and "a beacon of intelligence and purpose" (Houston Chronicle).

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. / Short Program at 8:30 p.m. / Screening at 9:00 p.m.
