Shockingly Modern - 20th Century Modernist Architecture

Speaker: Keith Bringe
In a highly visual presentation, Mr. Bringe will provide an overview of the period and will speak about Art Deco/Moderne architecture from the late 1920s through '40. He will focus on the work done by the Chicago art deco Survey. Included in the talk: mainstays like the Lake Theatre and Marshall Fields, lost structures including River Forest's "Century of Progress House" and Weiboldt's Department Store and residential jewels. He will also examine the relationship and influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on art deco.

Pleasant Home was designed in 1897 by noted architect George W. Maher for investment banker and philanthropist John W. Farson and his wife Mamie Ashworth Farson. Pleasant Home is considered one of the earliest and most distinguished examples of Prairie School Architecture in the nation, and is operated by the Pleasant Home Foundation as a living museum, which is open to the public and offers a year-round schedule of educational programs, community events and festivals and cultural performances.
