10th Annual Masters of the Building Arts Festival

March 28-29, 2014

CHARLESTON, S.C. - February 11, 2014 - The American College of the Building Arts is pleased to announce its 10th Annual Masters of the Building Arts Festival, taking place Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29, 2014. The event celebrates the extraordinary skill and artistry of master craftspeople and the durability of traditional building techniques.

This year’s theme, Living Traditions, highlights the customs passed down by skilled craftsman who turn basic needs like shelter into objects of delight that inspire, excite and enthrall.

Members of the building arts community as well as guest artisans and professionals from around the country will come together for two days of professional workshops, lectures and training, culminating with the MBA Festival on Saturday, March 29th from 10am-5pm. All events are open to the public.

On Friday, March 28th, ACBA, will host two 2-day workshops presented by Lie-Nielsen Toolworks and Cathedral Stone which are free and open to the public. The college will also present, in conjunction with The Charleston Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) and the Charleston Library Society, a series of lectures on architecture and design at the Library Society, 164 King Street, Charleston, SC.

The main Masters of the Building Arts Festival takes place at the Old Charleston District Jail, 21 Magazine Street, Charleston, from 10am-5pm. The event is designed to engage the public in the history and art of traditional building and the built environment. Attendees will have an opportunity to interact with artisans demonstrating their crafts and participate in a more than a dozen lecture on preservation, new construction, architecture and decorative arts. Artisans from around the country will be demonstrating their crafts including: SC Arts Commission Artisan and stone carver David Gillespie, master mason and author Tom Russack, the Midwest Tool Collectors Association, wood carver Mary May, civic and ecclesiastical designer in the classical tradition Domiane Forte, decorative artist Pierre Finkelstein and more.  A photo and print exhibition on the historic buildings of Charleston native architect Robert Mills (1781 – 1855), American’s first and foremost professional architect, will be shown the month of March at the college.

The MBA Festival ends with the 2nd annual Craftsmen & Craft Brews Lowcountry Boil, a fundraiser for the ACBA Student Guild, which includes craft beers, Frogmore Stew, silent auction and live entertainment. The college will also present its inaugural Living Traditions Awardto a local craftsperson or company of craftspeople who have created an exceptional piece of Building Art within the last five years. Tickets are $25 ($15 for students with ID).

The American College of the Building Arts is a non-profit, four-year liberal arts college dedicated to educating the next generation of buildingartisans and to preserving the building arts in America. The Masters of the Building Arts Festival is part of ACBA’s educational outreach mission to educate and share with the public the role of the artisan in the modern world, celebrate working artisans, and increase exposure of the College.
