Book signings in conjunction with the 350th New Jersey Anniversary

March 23, 2014
Book signings in conjunction with the 350th New Jersey Anniversary
Macculloch Hall Historical Museum (MHHM) is celebrating the 350th anniversary of New Jersey with book signings by authors whose work explores aspects of the state’s history. On Sunday March 23rd we welcome Jude M. Pfister who will be available to sign and sell books to museum visitors during touring hours 1pm – 4pm. He is the author of many publications and will bring and discuss “The Jacob Ford Jr. Mansion”, awarded The Eastern National Board of Directors Author’s Award, and “The Fords of New Jersey”.  Visitors may also wish to visit the second floor gallery exhibit
“Made in New Jersey: A Celebration of Decorative and Fine Arts” which stars the
Museum’s collection of New Jersey stoneware, silver, and artists such as Thomas
Nast, A.B. Frost and Edward Kranich.

Dr. Pfister’s books highlight an important New Jersey family and their home. In “The Jacob Ford Jr. Mansion” he discusses how in 1772, the Ford family began building what would easily become the largest home in Morristown. Years later, it became the site of the first national historical park in the United States. Today, the mansion is best known as George Washington's headquarters, when it became a strategic site during a winter encampment and gained importance for its role in the American Revolution. Mr. Pfister continues the story in “The Fords of New Jersey”. While experiencing triumph and defeat during some of the most complex times in American history, the Ford family rose to prominence in colonial America through their devotion to principle and a commitment to family, and left an indelible mark on their community. In the nineteenth century, the Fords adapted to the shifting economic and cultural landscape with grace and ingenuity. Their stately home is now a monument to the remarkable times in which they lived. Their story reflects the larger story of Morris County, New Jersey and America.

Dr. Pfister has been Chief of Cultural Resources at the Morristown National Historical Park since 2004 and has been with the National Park Service in the field of historic preservation and cultural resource conservation since 1993. Dr. Pfister oversees the museum, archival, and library programs at Morristown. His professional interests include American constitutional development; the development of American historiography as a separate discipline; historic preservation and the communication of cultural patrimony to the general public; and understanding the broad scope of historic preservation through the interconnectedness of cultural resources. He earned his BA from Delaware State University, his MA from Washington College, and his doctorate (D.Litt.) from Drew University.

Book signings with other New Jersey authors will continue throughout the spring, please visit maccullochhall.org for dates. Admission includes meeting with authors, house tours, and gallery visits between 1pm and 4pm. In addition to book signings the Museum is also presenting a speaker series to celebrate the 350th anniversary taking place at 4:30pm on the second Sunday of each month through June. Tickets for Sunday programs go on sale from 1pm on the day of the program, no advance sales. House tours (regular admission applies) take place throughout the afternoon, the last tour ticket is sold at 3pm. Visitors can also enjoy the upstairs gallery exhibit “Thomas Nast Brings Down Boss Tweed,” featuring the political cartoons Thomas Nast created attacking Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall, prior to the speaker programs. Also on display, “Controversies” presents challenging subject matter on New Jersey history topics and events which had national significance: medical experimentation, immigration, and the right to die. A second series of programs, related to the “Controversies” exhibit takes place on the first Sunday of each month through June. Visit maccullochhall.org for more details.
