Preservation of Plastics I Aug. 6-8

This course focuses on simple, manageable, and low cost strategies for coping with plastic and partly plastic objects while maintaining them in a mixed collections environment.  Setting effective collections care policies, determing reasonable priorities, identifying benign versus offgassing plastics, strategies to manage plastic-containing objects will be emphasized in this course.  

Preservation of Plastics II Aug. 9-11

This course will focus on the most collectible and problematic plastics found in art, archives, and museum collections.  Participants will learn about the composition of each plastic, how to identify and distinquish between plastics using simple tests, examine the inherent risks of each plastic, and examine methodologies to manage these plastics in the collections environment.  

Computer Software For Collections Management Aug. 9-11

The focus of this course is the process of cataloguing and maintenance of collections records utilizing computer database systems.  Additionally, features and systems are introduced, compared, and discussed.   

Care of Photographic Collections III Aug. 9-11

This course will focus on characteristics of various photographic processes; stabilization of early cased objects, glass plate negatives, and photographic albums; cleanng of negatives and cased images; solutions to commonly encountered preservation issues; parameters which determine treatment options for gelatin photographs; and an understanding of digital images and their preservation.  

Collections Management in Storage Aug. 13-17

This course focuses on collections management (i.e., risk management, staff training, inventory control, handling techniques, and equipment); facilities (i.e., security, environmental standards, monitoring, fire prevention, design, and off-site storage); and storage (i.e., unit designs and types, materials used in storage unit construction, and custom versus off the shelf units).  

Introduction to Exhibition Lighting Aug 21-23

The goal of this course is for the participant to become familiar with the main parameters of exhibition lighting as it relates to material preservation, exhibit content, psychological effect, and exhibit design.  

Care of Textiles I Aug. 21-24 

This course emphasizes the chemical and physical structure of fibers and fiber identification.  Additionally, as related to textiles the following topics will be covered:  agents of deterioration, environmental standards, handling and storage standards, exhibition standards, properties and effects of finishes, and treatment/cleaning considerations.  

Care of Textiles II Aug. 27-29

As related to textiles, this course will cover treatment ethics, condition reporting and documentation, an introduction to fiber microscopy, techniques for display of fragile textiles, non-intrusive mounting techniques for flat textiles, and basic repair of structural damage.  

Gilding Workshop II:  Advanced Gilding Techniques Aug. 21-24

Topics covered in this course include gesso texturing and re-cutting; making molds and ornaments; carving, modeling and casting; clay mixes and advanced leafing techniques; toning, aging, and sealing; and finishes (matte and glossy).  

Gilding Workshop III:  The Conservation of Gilded Wooden Objects Aug. 27-30 

This course focuses on the conservation and restoration of gilding on wood, the use of modern restoration materials on artifacts made with traditional techniques, and the structure of historical objects and their deterioration.  Also covered are condition reporting and documentation, defining treatment goals, communicating the treatment plan, cleaning, restoration ornament selection, in-gilding.
