Join ADSW member Frank Morra at his 1921 bungalow for an afternoon devoted to lithographed metal toys. During the afternoon, we’ll look at toys, photos of toymakers and factories as well as patent diagrams. Specializing in the products of the Julius Chein and Wolverine companies, his collection includes banks, animated figures, amusement park rides, trains, cars, and planes. The piece de resistance is a set of wind-up bands from the 20s to the 50s that includes Jazzbo Jim, Sam and Ham, the Marx Merrymakers and the Dogpatch Four.
Fellow collectors are encouraged to bring their metal toys to share with the group.
We will have a "hands on"portion, in which attendees will be able to try their hand at making a miniature Chein beach toy. (In the absence of rare and expensive metal fabrication equipment, paper will be used.)
Coffee, tea and dessert will be served.
Cost: $10 donation to Art Deco Society of Washington.
Please RSVP before August 8, 2007. Attendance is limited to 20 people.
Location: Northwest DC, near Chevy Chase Circle and the Avalon Theater. Full directions will be provided to all who register.
