How to Identify, Research and Document Your Historic Property

May 31, 2014

For our last event in celebration of National Preservation Month, Pasadena Heritage is hosting a seminar on How to Identify, Research and Document Your Historic Property, on Saturday, May 31st, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Altadena Community Church.

Whether you have a historic property, are interested in learning how to conduct research, or are looking to explore the architectural history of Pasadena this event will inform and inspire a passion for preservation. You will learn not only the basics of architecture in Pasadena but discover how to dive into the archives and uncover history yourself. Pasadena Heritage will provide practical advice and answer your questions by bringing together experts in the fields of Architecture and Historic Preservation. Come to listen, stay to look, and leave ready to walk into the past.

The seminar will be divided into two sessions: "What Style Is It?" wherePasadena Heritage Executive Director, Susan N. Mossman, will present an overview of the architectural styles in Pasadena. She will highlight typical characteristics and show some prime examples from Victorian and Craftsman to a variety of Revival Styles and Midcentury Modern.

The second session, "Discovering History and Documenting it in Photos", will be led by Tim Gregory, the "Building Biographer" and Dennis Hill, professional photographer. This session will cover the basics on researching the history of your property, finding its original building permit, discovering the changes made to it, and uncovering who designed it, who built it and who lived in it over time. You will also learn how to photograph a building, highlight its distinctive features, and/or create thorough documentation of a building or project.

Time: 10:00 a.m. on May 31th
Location: The Altadena Community Church.

Ticket prices are $12 for Pasadena Heritage members and $15 for the general public. Tickets on sale now, and can be purchased over the phone at (626) 441-6333 or online at www.pasadenaheritage.org.  Tickets may also be purchased on Saturday morning prior to the seminar, at the Altadena Community Church: 943 E.
