The T. Thomas Fortune Project is a group of concerned citizens who have come together to save the Home of T. Thomas Fortune, a National Historic Landmark in Red Bank, New Jersey. We plan to purchase and restore the house, and create a Cultural Center dedicated to diversity, advocacy, & tolerance, which will have a vital role in the town, the county, and the state.
T. Thomas Fortune was born on October 3, 1856 in Jackson County, Florida during slavery, and grew up in Florida during the period of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
He was the highly influential editor of the nation's leading black newspaper The New York Age, and was the leading economist in the black community. He was a long-time adviser to Booker T. Washington. T. Thomas Fortune was not only an effective journalist, but was also a pioneer social organizer.
As early as 1889, at the age of 33, he was the driving force behind formation of an organization known as the National Afro-American League
Fortune moved to Red Bank, New Jersey in 1901. He named his home now located at 94 Drs James Parker, Maple Hill Fortune died June 2, 1928 at the age of 71 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Eden Cemetery, Collingdale.
