Florida Lighthouse Day
September 15, 2007 |
Governor Charlie Crist proclaimed September 15 Florida Lighthouse Day. Florida's 30 historic lighthouses which string along like emeralds on a coastline necklace, are a national resource treasured for their historic, cultural and scenic values. They can be forgotten and neglected if not protected. Many of the lighthouses have open houses on the Day, including a first brick laying in the rebuilding of the Cape St. George Lighthouse, which collapsed in October 2005. The Florida Lighthouse Association promotes, preserves and protects the rich maritime heritage of the remaining 30 historic lighthouses for future generations. |
